Gunmen kill Scores in Benue

Gunmen believed to be Fulani herdsmen have killed scores of villagers in Benue State in a long-running conflict over grazing rights, the state government said on Monday.

“The magnitude of killings is enormous. Scores of people were killed in the past two weeks by Fulani herdsmen in at least 10 local government areas of the state,”

Teenagers Invade Lagos

There was confusion on the Lagos Island on Friday when about 50 hoodlums, mostly teenagers, invaded five streets, where they killed a resident, Ade Busari, and looted several shops. Our correspondent gathered that the hoodlums were armed with daggers and machetes during the attack.

The Inspector General of Police Intelligence Response Team (IRT) and the Kaduna State Command SIB operatives have smashed a deadly killer gang.

The combined forces have also arrested 4 suspects in connection with the kidnappingand subsequent murder of an army officer, Col. Samaila Yunusa, in Kaduna on March 27, 2016.

Fulfilled threaten by the Niger Delta Avengers

Barely a day after the militant group in southern Nigeria, the Niger Delta Avengers threatened what it termed “something big”, reports say a major pipeline operated by Italy’s ENI, Agip has been attacked in Nembe, Bayelsa State.

This follows the attacks on Chevron’s Estravos pipeline, and another on the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation pipelines, earlier this week.

The Nembe pipeline is said to carry the bonny light crude exported by Royal Dutch Shell

Jonathan not needed in Metuh’s trial – EFCC

The Economic and Financial Crimes commission (EFCC) on Tuesday said it could effectively prosecute the trial of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) spokesman, Olisa Metuh, without involving former President Goodluck Jonathan in the case.

EFCC’s position followed Metuh’s argument that since Jonathan was allegedly involved in the process leading to the payment of funds for his presidential campaign, the ex-president is a necessary witness in the case.

Metuh and his company, Destra Investment Limited, are being tried before the Federal High court, Abuja, for allegedly receiving N400m from the office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) for security services, which he allegedly diverted to fund his party’s activities.

They are also accused of flouting the money laundering Act by making $2m suspicious investment.

At the conclusion of the prosecution’s witness last week, Metuh filed a no-case submission in court.

In the application, he argued among others, that the prosecution has failed to make out a prima facie case against him by not inviting Jonathan as its witness.

The EFCC in its response argued that it had conveniently made out a case against Metuh for which the court should direct him to enter defence.

The commission argued that Jonathan is not a necessary prosecution witness, saying it has effectively established its case with the number of witnesses invited to testify in court.

It urged the court to dismiss Metuh’s no-case argument.

The United States army has paid £567,000 in damages to a female former trainee who said she was sacked after reporting a superior officer for sexual harassment.

Lyudmila Starkey sued the army claiming that she lost her job after alleging that Sergeant Wayne Lord, a supervising officer, had sent her hundreds of sexually explicit text messages and nude photos of himself when they worked together at Presidio of Monterey, an army base in California.

She said was ostracised for reporting Sergeant Lord, whose wife worked as a lieutenant at the base and was her direct supervisor before her dismissal.

In a statement issued through her lawyers, Ms Starkey said she believed she was fired because Sergeant Lord was popular and she had dared to report him. He was later moved from the base and given another job at the US defence department.

"Rather than support me as the trainee officer that had been continuously harassed, the army chose to set me up for termination while at the same time finding my harasser a new job without any repercussions for him,” Ms Starkey said.

“He sends naked pictures and I’m out of a job, and he remains employed. I only hope that my coming forward helps other women and the culture at the Army of silence and retaliation will change.”

Mark Epstein, Ms Starkey’s lawyer, said the award was one of the largest ever made by the army to settle a sexual harassment case, adding that his client received hundreds of explicit texts from Sergeant Lord at all hours.

He said Sergeant Lord had a history of sexual harassment which the army knew about.

"I have never seen a stronger case of sexual harassment and wrongful termination,” he said. ”The text messages were highly sexual and incredibly offensive, not to mention plentiful."

An army spokesman expressed regret over the episode, adding: “The army and the Starkey family have agreed on a settlement so that all parties can move beyond this breach of army core values.”
